Muriel Thorn Obituary

Murielle “Muriel” Augustine (Begin) Thorn 93 of West Roxbury passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 23, 2024 at the German Centre in West Roxbury. She was the beloved wife of Charles Thorn who she shared 72 years of marriage before his passing in 2022. Muriel was born in Merrimac MA, the eldest child of  Arthur and Bertha Giguere Begin. The family moved to Boston when Muriel was in middle school and she graduated from St Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain in 1947.   Shortly after graduating from high school, she met her future husband Charles Thorn, whom she married in 1950. They bought their first house on Capital Street where they raised their 3 boys in a 2-bedroom apartment before eventually settling into their forever home just next door.  Muriel was a homemaker until after the birth of her 4th child.   She set out to shed some pounds, which led to a lifelong career with Weight Watchers.  Muriel encouraged and motivated hundreds of people to reach their weight loss goals. There wasn’t a time while out and about town that she didn’t run into someone thanking her for helping them be a thinner version of themselves. Muriel was a ball of energy who loved to take long walks, visit the ocean, was an avid reader, seamstress, chef, baker, and loved to travel and explore new things.   Her extended family was huge, and this was the center of her social life.  Muriel’s greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. She was so proud of them, and blessed to have 7. When Muriel entered retirement, she started taking art classes, and using water colors, produced many beautiful, gallery worthy works of art. Muriel even in her older years, was always up for anything, had an amazing sense of humor, and witty as can be.

Muriel was predeceased by her husband Charles Thorn. Muriel was the dear sister of Ronald Begin (deceased) and his wife Claire (deceased), Lee Begin and his wife Sally of Ohio, Lorraine Egan and her husband James (deceased) of Medfield, Arthur Begin and his wife Jeannie of Dedham, Anita Begin (deceased) Charline Lawless and her husband James (deceased) of Norwood, Richard Begin and his wife Marie of West Roxbury, and many nieces and nephews who adored her.

She is survived by her children Steven Thorn and his wife Kathleen of West Roxbury, Kevin Thorn of Denver, CO, Richard Thorn and his wife Karen of Franklin, Marleen Durkey and her husband John “Jad” of Franklin.Nana to her 7 grandchildren, Jessica Eileen Goldberg and her husband Ross of Dedham, Katherine Marie Thorn of Amesbury, Andrew Charles Thorn and his wife Sarita of Hyde Park, Rebecca Ellen Davey and her husband Chris of Roslindale, Richard Michael Thorn and his fiance Rachel of Milford, Matthew John Durkey and Elizabeth Murielle Durkey both of Franklin.  4 great grandchildren, Evan and Iris Goldberg, William and Wyatt Davey.
